6 All Time Favourite Indian Sitcoms to Beat Covid Gloominess

The past few weeks have been challenging for the world at large owing to the Coronavirus pandemic. As a means to contain the spread of Covid-19, India has been observing nationwide lockdown. These have been testing times for everyone around causing a surge in stress levels.

To top it off, pandemic-centric news, memes, videos, text messages and the like are doing excessive rounds often leaving people unsettled. It furthers the gloominess over prevailing uncertainties. Perhaps for better observation of lockdown rules and upliftment of dampened spirits, many old gems of the Indian television were seen making a return on the small screen.

Mythological series of Ramayan and Mahabharat received record breaking viewership after the reruns were launched during the lockdown. Spurred on by their success many hit Indian series started returning.

Although there are a lot of rib-tickling sitcoms that had kept the audience entertained for ages, we have compiled a list for the ones which are currently occupying screen time but often escape the attention of viewers. 1: Khichdi

Many millennials grew up with the joy of sharing laughs with their loved ones during a daily sitcom. Binge watching lurked in the shadows in those days of past having a dearth of mainstream video streaming platforms.

Simple bliss ruled over prerogatives as fans waited for an entire day or week for the next episode of their favourite series. Superhit dramedy, Khichdi was no different.

What is it about?

Composed and helmed by writer-director Aatish Kapadia, it followed the lives of quirky members of a joint family who can leave one in splits with their humorous ways.

The cast ensemble of Khichdi was packed with seasoned actors rendering the plotline an easy flow. Famous one liners of beloved characters astoundingly kept their appearances throughout the episodes.

Among other things, the audience could not get enough of Hansa-Praful’s dissection of English words, Babuji’s exasperation over Praful’s absurdity and Jayshree’s inclination for gossiping and penchant for conspiracy theories.

Khichdi was one of the earlier hits to catch on to the Western trend of returning as seasons. So far there have been three seasons and a movie adaption.

Hit duo of two childhood friends, Rocky and Mayur embark on a food journey to taste delicacies of a town or city in each episode. They would touch upon renowned eateries in the process and go over the local favorites bringing the flavors through our television screens. There is going to be tons of laughter as well.

One of the best parts being Rocky trying out nonvegetarian dishes and Mayur being a vegetarian focus on the choice of vegetarian menu giving a wholesome peak at the cuisines of a place.

Undoubtedly Rocky and Mayur’s many hilarious remarks along the way struck a chord with the audience. Not to mention the scoreboard where they’d rate a famous restaurant based on taste, service, ambiance and value for money. Produced by legendary Jaya Bachchan, the show’s popularity can be assessed from the fact that it is rated 8.6 on the IMDb.

Just a typical affluent, progressive and advanced joint family of the 90s. The plot follows their everyday struggles which are often so engaging that they’d keep you hooked. Their troubles tread on the lines of, domestic help going on off, girlfriend/boyfriend woes and family acting insane with worry when a family member is suspected of Diabetes among others.

Directed by Anand Mahendroo who helmed Dekh Bhai Dekh as well, the first season was aired in 1985. The second innings followed suit in the 90s. Siblings Ratna Pathak and Supriya Pathak had teamed up for this sitcom, one of the reasons behind its popularity other than a progressive outlook.

What is it about?

A drama quite ahead of its time when the two long lost friends from distinct careers in a twist of fate come face to face again while shifting to a new accommodation in Mumbai. They soon become paying guests and much ensues afterward when more characters drop in.

Amidst the confusion, laughter and engaging storyline, one can find themselves slipping into days of simplicity and modern changes to the landscape of Indian television.

Old gems were retrieved from the times when Daya Bhabhi was still around on the show and enthralled her fans with her funny weirdness.

Revolves around the lives of several residents of Gokuldham housing society who are together as a community in each other’s ups and downs. It is based on column Duniya Ne Undha Chashma by famed writer Taarak Mehta. It was released in 2008 and they haven’t looked back ever since.

The characters find themselves in the most hilarious predicaments, chiefly Jethalal Gada, who is often aided by fast friend Taarak Mehta.

For those who put across questions like what could possibly go wrong on this beautiful day, could head to catch a glimpse of Jethalal’s life. His life could go haywire in a split second out of the blue. Laughter follows his troubles and their resolution.
